In high school, I wrote an essay detailing the difficulties of growing up in the Barbie generation. You might think you know what the overarching theme was: impossible standards, warped sense of self, societal ideals…that wasn’t it. My problems stemmed from the idea that Barbie could be anything. With the change of an outfit, she could be an astronaut, teacher, workout instructor. Later in the day she could lead a board meeting and then visit the peds unit at the Barbie hospital and close the night at salsa dancing class (complete with sequined costume). So many options, where to even begin?
I carried this with me through college and into adulthood. I could do anything I wanted, the world was at my fingertips. However, we all know that’s not exactly the case. I placed pressure on myself to land a job as quickly out of college as possible, leading me to accept a retail management job that I was never in love with. I spent the evenings browsing LinkedIn, posting my resume on job boards and finally ended up scouring internship websites. Determined to make a change despite the possibility of having to take steps back, maybe move in with my parents….I wanted to move forward any way I could.
I lucked into a position at a luxury resale e-commerce business, and the rest, as they say, is history. The position was a step down financially but the opportunity I saw was endless. (This is where the Barbie reference ties back.) This company allowed me to explore everything. I learned how to manage an online store, the importance of good customer service. I learned that growing quickly is awesome, but you need to have guidelines and optimize the operations of your business or you will kick yourself later when you suddenly have a team of 20 and no documented rules. I learned that the best way to learn is to try, and you might fail but you will learn. I managed multi-million dollar accounts-from copywriting to photography to pricing negotiation. I learned it is ok to make drastic changes for the health of the business. I hired and trained teams, I cried and lost sleep, I stumbled but I always got up. And I helped grow a business, and cared about it like it was my own.
That chapter has ended and led me into other adventures. Staying on brand, I’ve added social media management at a public relations and marketing agency, hospitality and destination-based retail and operational consulting to my Barbie wardrobe. I will always be looking to learn and looking to grow–I have my mind set on supporting the ambitious do-ers of the world. Let me help you build your dream.
